About Us

Moira is a confectionery community. The members of this community make various confectionery products by mixing milk, lamb, flour, ghee, molasses and sugar. Among the well-known and delicious sweets made by the Moiras are Sandesh, Rasgolla, Matichur, Mihidana, Luchi, Kachuri, Jilapi, Khwaja, Barfi, Halua etc. In the past the Moiras belonged to the Hindu community. Moira’s team is made up of skilled people from different professional groups. However, the Moiras are distinguished from the professionals known as Madhunapit, Modak and Kuri, who are considered by some to be a sub-community of the Moira community. At present, however, it is meaningless to separate them from each other, as in reality both communities or groups are well known as confectionery makers. The Moiras were basically a large part of the Vaishnava community. They consider Ganesha as a special deity and worship him. The special season of this puja is the time of sugarcane harvesting, when sweets are made with a mixture of fresh molasses to please the deity. The main occupation of the Moiras is to make sweets. But nowadays many of them are engaging themselves in other occupations including farming. Among the Hindus, the Moiras belong to the upper caste. They provide sweets to the community and are engaged in maintaining the sanctity of the festival. They belong to the Navshak community and the Brahmins take the water they touch. They also follow the rules of their community in their diet.

In the past, there were examples of good confectionery among the Hindus and then people used to keep only confectionery as food while traveling. Lots of sweets are sold at traditional fairs and festivals. The role of mayors in society is very important. Nowadays the Moiras are not confined to any particular community. People of different religions and economic and social backgrounds are getting involved in Moira’s work. Wealthy businessmen are now investing large sums of money in confectionery. Many Moiras are making money by making confectionery, keeping confectionery factories afloat. Housewives also make many types of sweets and cakes such as: pakan pitha, patisapta, raschitai etc. Rice powder, flour, oil, ghee, date molasses and juice, palm molasses and juice, sugarcane molasses etc. are used in the preparation of these sweets.
